Completing your application

A simple guide and top-tips for a high-quality application.

Once you have searched our vacancies and found a job you’d like to apply for, read all the guidance on this page carefully. To apply for a job, you must complete an online application form.

This makes sure that everyone gives information in the same format and allows us to check your application in a standard way. We don’t accept CVs, so please fill in the form as fully and accurately as possible.

We won’t take into account any previous applications you have sent us or anything we already know about you.

Once you are confident that you meet the essential requirements of the person specification, set some time aside to complete the form.

Work Permits

If you need sponsorship to work in the UK, please visit the Home Office website for information on sponsorship and visa status before you fill in the application form.

Disclosing information about you

We ask you to declare:

  • whether you are related to an existing member of staff
  • if you’ve ever been dismissed by a previous employer
  • if you have any criminal convictions, reprimands or cautions.

This is to help assess your suitability for the role you have applied for. Other checks will be made so it’s important that you answer these questions honestly.

If we formally offer you a job that involves working with or around patients we’ll apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check on you.

Completing the application form

The online application form will take you through several sections of your application. Try to complete all parts of the application form. If some sections of the form do not apply to you, enter N/A (not applicable) in the spaces provided.

Almost all communication during the recruitment process is by email and text through the TRAC website so it’s important that you give a correct email address and mobile phone number if you have one.

Job description and person specification

Each role we advertise is based on a job description and person specification. The job description lists the main duties and responsibilities of the post. The person specification outlines the skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications that you’ll need for the job.

Read the job description, person specification and any other supporting information provided before you start to complete your application. This will help you to assess whether you have the qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience we are looking for.

We shortlist applicants against the job description and person specification, so give examples to demonstrate how your skills and experience are relevant to the job you are applying for and how and where you have used them.

Provide information on any relevant experience from your present or previous jobs. You can include skills and experience gained from community or voluntary work, work experience, leisure interests and activities in the home.

Personal information

We will use this to contact you in relation to your application, invite you to an interview and let

you know the outcome if you make it to that stage. It’s really important we have your up-to-date

details, especially your correct email address and contact telephone numbers.

Qualifications and training

Make sure you let us know about all the relevant educational and professional qualifications you have or are studying toward at the moment. It’s helpful for us to have as much information as possible but the level of the qualification is especially important. We will ask to see the certificates to verify the qualifications you include on your application if you are invited to an interview so make sure you have them to hand.

Don’t forget to add any training courses you have completed that may be relevant to the role you are applying for.

Some of our roles don’t require you to have the qualification at the point you apply. If you think a job is perfect for you and you don’t have the right qualification but are willing to learn on the job, don’t worry. It may be possible to offer you the role you are interested in on a trainee basis. Contact the recruiting manager to check.

Employment history

We need to know about all the jobs you’ve had from the most recent to your very first one. Telling us about the responsibilities you had and the activities you carried out which are relevant to the role you are applying for is really important.

If you’ve had any gaps in employment, there is a section on the form where you can let us know about that too. Examples of reasons for a gap in employment include a period of maternity or shared parental leave, time off to care for dependents or a career break and there may be others.

Completing this information at the application stage helps us get you into your new role if you are offered the job you’ve applied for more quickly.

References

This is who we can contact for an employment reference. It will need to cover a three-year period. You may need to add several referees to cover the three years. It can include paid or unpaid voluntary work and any training. It should be at least two recent employers and the most recent one should be your current or most recent line manager.

If you have never been employed, you may provide a referee who is in a position of responsibility. The referee will need to be able to comment on your work experience, competency, personal qualities, and suitability for the post.

Don’t forget to make sure the email address you give is correct and up to date. We will send the reference request this way and that the referees you have identified know you have put them forward to give you a reference.

Supporting information

Here is where you really shine. In this section tell the recruiting manager why you are the best person for the role. Here you can tell them all about the skills and knowledge you have that will enable you to do the role and do it well.

Look at the person specification in the job description and write down the most relevant examples of how you think you meet what the role is asking of you. You can use examples from outside work if they are relevant. Don’t forget, we want to hear about what you did and how fantastic you are.
